Waist Training vs. Tummy Tucks – Two Very Different Options in Orange County and Los Angeles

If you follow any celebrities on Instagram or Twitter, you’ve likely seen a lot of posts about waist training, with stars that seem to swear by them as a way to get a trim figure. Despite their advertisements, waist training is not an alternative to plastic surgery, and in some cases can be harmful – especially to those that have recovered from obesity.

What is Waist Training?

Waist training is essentially a carbon copy of the corsets of the 1500s. Despite advertisements that claim it’s an effective new way to get the shape that you’ve wanted, the “technology” has existed since early European times, and has long been a way for women to achieve a shape that they feel makes them sexy.

It’s because of this that the same risks that occurred back centuries ago still apply:

  • Waist training makes it harder to take deep breaths.
  • Waist training doesn’t create permanent changes.
  • Waist training puts undo stress on your organs.

It’s that last one that is a big red flag for those that have lost a significant amount of weight as well, like many weight loss patients that we see here at Plastic Surgery Body Contouring Center. Organ pressure is one of the dangers of being overweight, and often after weight loss the body is still figuring out where those organs go. In some cases, especially for post bariatric patients, waist training may be downright dangerous.

And keep in mind that all of these risks are for temporary reshaping. If you stop using the corset/girdle, your body would go right back to normal.

The Long Term Effects of A Tummy Tuck with Liposuction

Waist training is a fun idea without the execution or safety. That’s why many women seek out tummy tucks with liposuction after weight loss. The combination can create permanent changes in the shape of your body without harming your organs. In some cases they are recommended for those that have undergone substantial weight loss, because they are the only way to successfully remove all of the extra skin and tissues that occur.

But even for non-weight loss/non bariatric patients, the idea that waist training will benefit the waist is a highly questionable one. Corsets, girdles, and now waist training clothing is a fun idea in theory, but one that could cause more harm than good and doesn’t create the long term results you’re looking for.
